Upcoming 14th Annual Christmas Walk in Independence Kentucky

It may be November, but the Christmas season is already gearing up in Independence.
The city’s 14th Annual Christmas Walk, to be held Dec. 4, will include a new location near the Kenton County Courthouse featuring new activities such as the Christmas Card for the Troops booth, a bell choir, hay wagon rides, a holiday quilt display, live nativity scene and model train display.
Favorites at the city building, fire house and senior center will return, including camel rides, a petting zoo, the St. Patrick’s Choir and Sugarfoot Cloggers.
Members of the Independence Business Association (IBA) worked with the city to make the new additions possible, explained IBA President John Richardson.
“Everybody enjoyed it when it used to be downtown, so we’re trying to continue a bit of an old-fashioned Christmas at downtown,” he said, adding that the event was moved to the city building when traffic became too much for the old Ky-17.
“Now that the road is complete, we’d like to see an event with an old-fashioned theme return to our downtown area,” Richardson said.
A shuttle bus will run residents back and forth between the two locations, Richardson said, and a Christmas display near the Independence Cemetery will connect the two in holiday spirit.
IBA member and Christmas walk organizer Doug Garner said the event will be a “great, old fashioned holiday experience.”
Historically-connected activities include a tour of Council Member-elect Chris Reinersman’s Victorian-era home as well as a chance to stop by the Kenton County Fire Assessment Insurance Company building on McCullum Pike, which hails from the late 1800s and is one of the oldest buildings around the courthouse, Garner said.
A slide show of old Independence photos will also be set up in a shop window in the downtown courthouse area.
“This is a really great opportunity for people to get involved in Independence’s history,” Garner said.
